Parallel Text

The Sign of the Beaver, by Elizabeth George Speare, clearly portrays that people should embrace one another despite their differences. When the Native Americans saved Matt from the bees, drowning, and injuring his ankle, they were showing that they were embracing Matt, even though he was a Colonist. Both The Sign of the Beaver and Rules, by Cynthia Lord, depict that people should embrace others. In The Sign of the Beaver, Matt and Attean, a Native American, learn to get along with each other. In Rules, Catherine learns to get along David and his disabilities. Catherine also learns to embrace Jason and his disability to speak.

Supporting Characters

A supporting character in The Sign of the Beaver, by Elizabeth George Speare, might be Attean because he is always showing how to survive, and Matt is always needing to survive in the wild. Attean is always doing most of the things that Matt wants to do, like hunt for food, which shows that he is a supporting character. Attean only shows that he is a supporting character through his actions. Matt is not doing what Attean is doing because he doesn't want to fall into the Native American ways of life.

The Other Side

"'Someday somebody's going to come along and knock this old fence down,' Annie said. And I nodded. 'Yeah,' I said. 'Someday.'" The Other Side, by Jacqueline Woodson, portrays that people should always break through the barriers that block them and step out of their comfort zone. Annie demonstrated this by always sitting on the fence and watching Clover and her friends play. This story was very similar to Freedom on the Menu because the people go against the status quo by 'standing up by sitting down.' The people came out of their comfort zones and stood up for what they thought was right.

Freedom Summer

Freedom Summer, by Deborah Wiles, portrays that friendship should never be taken for granted. The time period was the 1960s, when slavery was stil in place. Joe, a white boy, and John Henry, a black boy, were best friends, but it affected most of the activities they do together. The way Joe thought about John Henry's skin color was 'brown butter', which illustrates that Joe does not care about John Henry's skin color. Most whites at that time would not even be friends with a black.

War and Conflict

When the British and the Japanese fought over Singapore, many unpredicted events took place. First of all, a bunch of Indians joined the Japanese even though they were in league with the British. then, the British were so confident, but they lost many battles in Singapore. Then, the Japanese joined the Nazis. Finally, the British actually lost to the Japanese. This marked the beginning of the end of the British Empire.

Painting the Clouds With Sunshine is a song that obviously trying to cheer people up and get their minds off of the war. The tune cheers everyone up and makes them want to dane. The phrase ‘Painting the Clouds With Sunshine’ always comes up, and this illustrates the fact that the singer is trying to wipe away his fears of the war and focus on the bright side of everything. This upbeat song must be used for laughter, comedy, and joy. This song tries to hide the horrors of war.

Painting the Clouds With Sunshine

We watched the same documentary again and we discovered that when the Japanese took over Singapore, it was because they sneaked up on the British. They had bombed two aircraft carriers and sneak attacked the British at the Sentosa Beach (We're not really sure which beach they attacked). That was how the end of the British Empire began.

My group was at the Primary sources station and we discovered that one of the newspapers was made at the beginning of WWII, and most of the major events in the newspaper were about the Nazis' victories on bombing England. Even though most events were tragic, most of the people were smiling at the camera. This portrays that people should persevere through tough times. We noticed that the perspective of this newspaper was from the British. If it was in the Germans perspective, the newspaper would be full of victories.

My group was at the Write Around station. We noticed that most of the propaganda was in the British/American perspectives, and only some were from Japan. Another thing we noticed was that the Americans were abusing the Japanese.

2. "I don't want any stupid cake!" says the guy who goes to Europe and the Middle East. "Where's the champagne?"he says and laughs.

3. "That is," Wesley said, "that neither you nor me is her boy."

4. "Have you read Hills Like White Elephants yet?" he asked her.

4/4! All correct!

"Hi Henric," Papa said into the phone. "Your sister is bringing the children with you... Yes, yes, There will be a pack of cigarettes... Only one now... More are coming though... So is that a deal?... Yes, they're on they're way... Ok, bye now."
Why was Papa speaking like this? There are always cigars, if you know where to find them. What Papa was saying was like a code, but for what? Then it came to me. Ellen!

Bud, Not Buddy

This historical fiction book, Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis, takes place in the Great Depression. This is portrayed when in the beginning of the book, a caseworker from the orphanage tells Bud and another boy that they were going to foster homes and that they were lucky because there was a 'depression going on all over this country'. The Great Depression took place in the 1930s, and jazz was popular in that time. Bud was trying to find what he believes was his long lost father, Herman E. Calloway, a well known jazz musician. That is another piece of evidence that this story took place in the Great Depression. The final piece of evidence is that there were lots of old technology. There were telegrams and not so much cars. This drives me to the conclusion that the book Bud, Not Buddy took place in the Great Depression.

Frog Linoblock Print Reflection

These are my Frog Linoblock Prints inspired by Claude Monet. I think that the rightmost frog print is the best print because all the lines showed up well in the print. I think the one that didn't turn up well was the other green one because some of the lines didn't turn up well. The hardest part of this project was the carving part because it was hard to find the right carving too and make the lines almost perfect.
